I have recently joined Fine Art America where I have many paintings that are now available in print. You can purchase prints on canvas, metal and paper as well as greeting cards! Directly through this site you can also choose a frame, mat and glass (if you choose the paper option). I have tested the site out by ordering a replica of one of my paintings on canvas, one on metal as well as greeting cards. I am very pleased with the quality as well as the prompt delivery (your order ships within days!).
I have also started a shop on Etsy and have yet to figure out how to get any traffic... hopefully this will be a place where I can market some smaller works.

The link to my Etsy shop is here: Etsy - Paintbrush In Hand

I have one small Christmas show booked for Thursday, December 11th at Antioch University in Keene, NH. I will have my small nest and hydrangea blocks as well as greeting cards and a few medium size paintings.

There is something about crackled paint that I am attracted to. I wanted to experiment with it on some of my paintings. I used two types of crackle paint in this 24"x 36" acrylic on canvas. On the turquoise door I used a white crackle paste that I mixed with color and then spread on the canvas with a palette knife. The crackle on the large pot is a clear crackle paint that I painted over the color once it was dry. As the crackle dries, it cracks and you can add a layer of paint to land in the cracks. The following is a large painting where I used both techniques.

The crackle below is the crackle I applied after the painted pot was dry.

The paint on the door is the crackle paste. I mixed it with color and spread it on with a palette knife.

In past posts I have shared that I have painted several floors in my old house to add a touch of character and "one-of-a-kind-ness". This floor is one that I did in my dressing room (and temporary studio). I began to refer to my house as 'my nest' after I did this one. When I started to plan for the Waldorf show this year I thought that I should have a stool to sit on. I remembered that I had an oak stool in my basement so I dragged it outside, gave it a good brush off and base layer of white. I brought it up to my "studio" and set it on this painted floor. Lightbulb moment. The Stool became my perch. Thus: "Her Perch". Although I had no plan to sell it at the show, I could have sold it at least 10 times. Someone even gave me an idea to paint little ones for children and that is in the works. I have already purchased 3 unfinished mini stools.

I decided to part with this stool and thought the perfect way to do this was to enter it as a donation into the juried Stonewall Art Auction for Spring 2014. The event is coming up in a few weeks.
I lightly sanded the entire area inside the tape. After vacuuming the dust I put two coats of stain for the dark area of the "rug". I used Miniwax Wood Finish in Dark Walnut. You don't want to have the polyurethane combo stain because you need to be able to have your second color paint on easily and that will work out best if the stain sinks into the wood and leaves a dull finish.

This is after the two coats of stain.

Here is where the fun started... I wanted eight equal columns of zig-zag and a simple border made up of simple white lines. I taped around the edge and the area that was inside this border was divided equally by eight. I used a white pencil to draw my lines onto the floor which you can see here in this picture.

The taping of the diagonal lines came next... The flooring boards are exactly two inches wide which made this process easy on the measuring aspect of things... I used one and three quarter inch wide blue tape and it worked out perfectly to use the actual flooring as my guide in placing each blue strip. It is a little difficult to describe but if you look at my placement in the picture below you can see what I did. I used a metal ruler and an exacto knife to cut the strips exactly how I needed them. From this point on I didn't need to measure anymore...this is a huge reason that this project only took one day to plan, tape and apply the white paint. (The two coats of polyurethane added a few more days.)

It was around this point that I realized that this was going to be a tedious project. This shows how I would run the tape, then tear it off... I would line up the ruler in the seam of the zig-zag and then with an exacto knife I would cut the excess tape off. In this case it would be a cut to the left of the seam.

As I think back to this day, this is where I took a break and joined my family to cut down our Christmas tree. I thought this would be a great event to kick off my return to painting. A lot led up to this day as I refreshed my painting supplies, visited the site several times to scope out the areas that I would paint and as the time grew closer I anticipated what type of elements the weather would bring. The building is a gem but in need of many repairs. Plein Air artists would gather Saturday and Sunday to paint throughout the cemetery. Sunday afternoon the paintings would be auctioned off to raise money for the repair fund. Despite a terrible sunburn, I thoroughly enjoyed the day painting. Friends stopped by to visit and enjoy a picnic lunch and I also met many new people who seemed to be fascinated to see many artists painting in "plein air" throughout this cemetery. I also had a young artist named Caleb visit and he returned again with his sketch book and joined me for awhile...it was great to see his enthusiasm.

I was so pleased when I was contacted Sunday evening by someone who purchased the painting of the Camille Gagnon statue. I met her the day before while she was out on her run through the cemetery and we had a pleasant exchange while I was painting. I was happy that she, too, shared an equal appreciation for this statue... she stated that many feel she is the angel of the cemetery. Little did I know until half way through painting this that the person buried here was born 168 years ago on this very day: June 6, 1841!

Tinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10388934475615230141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5573923872068103620.post-54419508499350101412009-05-17T15:47:00.001-07:002009-05-27T18:12:28.124-07:00Early paintings....
Rajasthan, India 1993

In 1982, as a sophomore at Principia College, I and 15 other classmates traveled to India for a month on a photojournalism course. We stayed in many places... Kachwah Guest House in New Delhi, Mayur Tourist House in Agra, visited the majestic Taj Mahal. Especially memorable was a visit to the Taj in the moonlight while the rest of our families were awakening to Thanksgiving morning back in the States. We also saw the Red Fort, the Pearl Mosque and various tomb sites. After Agra was Jaipur where I met some lovely children playing in the streets. In Jaipur we stayed in the Bissau Palace Hotel and visited the Palace of the Winds, the Amber Fort, rode on elephant back to the gates of the fortress and visited a few palaces. We also took in a Bollywood movie with some new acquaintances we met while sightseeing. We camped at the Pushkar Fair for 3 days and witnessed thousands of pilgrims take their sacred dip in the Pushkar Lake. From there we went to Jodhpur and then on to Jaisalmer. This is where we left for a camel safari in the Thar Desert for 3 days. The painting above is from a photo that I took while in the desert. What I will never forget, is how these children were in the middle of miles and miles of sand, happy and quite content. Also lovely was hot tea in the desert. I never thought something like this would be so refreshing. After our safari and a memorable trip to Udaipur a few of us flew down to Bombay (now Mumbai) for a week of relaxation before we returned home. Without a doubt, India was a life changing experience for me. A place full of vivid color, exotic aromas, and mysterious people. I look forward to revisiting my photos for some future watercolors....

Seagulls Gloucester, MA, 1988

While growing up my parents often took us to the ocean. There are so many lovely people out there who have so openly and honestly shared their lives to anyone who happens upon them.

For me, I thought this would be a good way to rekindle my love for painting. Over the years and for many reasons, I have allowed large blocks of time (decades) pass while ignoring my need to self express through painting. "Are you still painting?" Well.... "Not like I used to." is often the response.

My first few posts will show paintings from the early years... junior high school, (Fitchburg, Mass.) boarding school (St. Louis, Missouri), and college (Elsah, Illinois) 1975 - 1985 for personal documentation and for my children. The watercolors from 1988 represent the summer I spent devoted solely to painting.

It's time to close the gap... and find again the reason that I love to look at the ocean, study shadows, fabric folds, flower gardens and facial expressions. Who knows what I might find and maybe you too will be inspired to pick up your brushes again.

Tina

Tinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10388934475615230141noreply@blogger.com1
